Overview

The Large Clam (typically referring to the Giant Clam genus Tridacna, such as T. maxima, T. crocea, or T. derasa) is the true “crown jewel” of a mature reef tank. These aren’t just filter feeders; they are living, breathing solar panels. Their vibrant, shimmering mantle—which can range from electric blue to gold-flecked emerald—contains millions of symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) that provide the clam with energy from light. A large clam acts as a massive biological filter and a stunning centerpoint that adds a sense of “prehistoric” scale to your aquarium.

Coloration: Incredible iridescent patterns of cobalt blue, turquoise, gold, or tiger-striped brown, often with “eyespots” (iridophores) along the mantle edge.

Size: 8 – 12 inches

Lighting: Very High (250–400+ PAR; they require intense lighting to survive. If the mantle looks “over-extended” or pale, they are starving for light).

Water flow: Moderate (enough to bring them fresh water and nutrients, but avoid direct powerhead “blasts” that cause the mantle to stay retracted).

Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic. While small juveniles (under 2 inches) need supplemental phytoplankton, “large” clams (4+ inches) get almost all their energy from light and nitrate/phosphate absorption from the water.

Aggressiveness: Peaceful (they have no stingers, but they can accidentally “pinch” a curious fish or snail if they retract their shell quickly).

Care Level: Moderate to Advanced (they require exceptionally stable water chemistry and intense lighting).

The “Foot” and Placement
Giant clams have an opening at the bottom of their shell where a “byssal gland” produces tough fibers to anchor them to rocks.

Rock Dwellers (T. maxima, T. crocea): These should be placed on a flat rock or a “clam cradle.” Once they attach, do not try to pull them off, or you will tear their internal organs.

Sand Dwellers (T. derasa, T. squamosa): These prefer to sit on the sandbed as they get larger, though placing a small flat stone underneath them in the sand helps them feel secure.
