The Red and Purple Favia (sometimes called the “Grape Ape” or “Midnight Cherry” Favia) is one of the most sophisticated-looking brain corals you can add to a reef. It features a deep, royal purple base with “eyes” that glow in a rich, saturated ruby or cherry red. This color combination is particularly prized because it lacks the common neon greens found in most corals, offering a moody, “twilight” aesthetic that looks incredible under heavy blue actinic lighting.
Coloration: Deep violet or plum-colored ridges with intense, glowing red or magenta centers.
Size: 0.5-1 inch frag
Lighting: Low to Moderate (75–125 PAR; purple pigments are easily damaged by high UV/white light, so keep them in lower-light areas to maintain that “velvet” look).
Water flow: Low to Medium (gentle, indirect flow is best to allow the fleshy tissue to swell during the day).
Feeding: Highly Recommended; like its cousins, it is a predatory coral. Feeding it mysis or coral pellets at night will encourage faster encrusting and bolder coloration.
Aggressiveness: Very Aggressive (it will deploy long, nearly invisible sweeper tentacles at night that can reach out 2–4 inches).
Care Level: Easy (very hardy and tolerant of slightly higher nutrient levels, which actually help the purple stay deep and rich).
