Overview:
The Orange Plate Coral (Fungia sp.) is a standout color variant of the common plate coral. While green is the “standard” for the species, a high-quality Orange Plate offers a level of warmth and fluorescence that few other sand-bed corals can match. These are often described as “Short Tentacle Plates” to distinguish them from their shaggier cousins, and they are prized for their metallic, almost glowing orange tissue.
Coloration: Brilliant solid orange, sometimes with a contrasting neon pink, yellow, green or white mouth.
Growth Pattern: Solitary/Discoid (flat, circular skeleton).
Lighting: Moderate (PAR 100–180). Interestingly, orange varieties often prefer slightly more light than green ones to maintain their “hot” pigment.
Water Flow: Low to Moderate (Gentle movement to prevent detritus buildup).
Feeding: High (Aggressive eater of meaty foods).
Aggressiveness: Moderate (No long sweepers, but will sting on contact).
Care Level: Easy.
