The Discosoma Mushroom is the quintessential “beginner coral,” known for its incredible hardiness and smooth, velvet-like texture. Unlike the fuzzy Rhodactis or the bubbly Ricordea, Discosoma species typically have a flatter, more streamlined profile. They are masters of adaptation, often thriving in corners of the tank where other corals might struggle. Because they reproduce readily by “walking” across the rockwork and leaving behind small pieces of their foot, they are perfect for reefers who want to see their tank naturally fill in with color over time.

Size: 1–3 inch diameter
Lighting: Low (too much light will cause them to curl up or detach)
Water flow: Low (gentle flow is required; they can easily be blown off the rockwork if the current is too strong)
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; they don’t have a strong feeding response like other mushrooms but benefit from high-quality water nutrients
Aggressiveness: Peaceful (rarely stings neighbors, but can “overgrow” them by simply shading them out)
