Overview:
Zoanthids, commonly called “Zoas,” are beloved entry-level corals for reef enthusiasts due to their stunning variety of colors, patterns, and rapid growth. These soft colonial corals form dense mats of individual polyps, adding vibrant life to your aquarium rockwork or glass surfaces. Highly adaptable and hardy, Zoanthids thrive in multiple lighting and water flow conditions, making them an excellent choice for filling lower-tier gaps in reef tanks. However, caution is advised as some species contain palytoxin, a potent neurotoxin, so always wear protection when handling.
Colorization:
Each polyp features a beautiful yellowish shade with an orange center, surrounded by a vivid purple ring and finished with a bright orange skirt, creating an eye-catching display.
Size:
The colony typically spans 2-3 polyps, growing quickly into dense mats that cover surfaces in your aquarium.
Lighting:
Zoanthids prefer low to moderate lighting (75–150 PAR) but can slowly acclimate to higher light conditions, allowing flexibility in aquarium placement.
Water Flow:
Medium water flow is ideal to keep the polyp faces clean from detritus and algae films, promoting healthy growth and appearance.
Feeding:
Although primarily photosynthetic, these corals benefit from supplemental feeding with amino acids or fine particulate coral foods, enhancing growth and polyp plumpness.
Aggressiveness:
Zoanthids are peaceful corals lacking stinging tentacles; however, they may overgrow and shade slower-growing neighbors over time.
Care Level:
Easy — suitable for beginners who want a vibrant, quick-growing coral to brighten their reef tank.
