The Grafted Acropora is one of the most fascinating “science experiments” in the reefing world. Unlike most corals that are a single solid color or a natural gradient, a “grafted” coral occurs when two different color morphs of the same species (typically Acropora yongei or Acropora tenuis) are grown so closely together that their tissues fuse. The result is a single coral with distinct, jagged streaks of contrasting colors—most famously neon green and bright red—sharing the same skeleton.

Coloration: Dark blue and neon green.

Size: 0.5 – 1 inch frag

Lighting: High to Very High (300–450 PAR; intense lighting is required to keep the red pigments from fading into the green).

Water flow: High and Turbulent (strong flow is critical to prevent “dead spots” within the branches and to keep the thin skin healthy).

Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, but strongly benefits from daily dosing of amino acids and micro-plankton to support the energy-intensive tissue fusion.

Aggressiveness: Peaceful to its own species (it won’t sting itself), but highly aggressive toward other types of Acropora.

Care Level: Advanced (requires a very stable, mature system with rock-solid Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium).
