The Green Hammer (Fimbriaphyllia paraancora) is the “bread and butter” of the LPS reefing world. While it might be more common than its “Splatter” or “Rainbow” cousins, a healthy Green Hammer is unbeatable for sheer luminescent volume. It features smooth, curved tips that resemble the head of a carpenter’s hammer or an anchor (hence its other common name, the Anchor Coral). It is the perfect entry-level Euphyllia for hobbyists looking to add that classic “swaying” motion to their tank without the extreme price tag of designer morphs.
Coloration: Typically features translucent tan or brownish stalks with vivid green tips
Size: 1 head
Lighting: Moderate (125–200 PAR; if the green starts to look “dusty” or brown, it may need slightly more light)
Water flow: Medium and Indirect (the tentacles should wave like grass in a breeze; avoid direct, “jet-like” flow which can tear the delicate tissue against the skeleton)
Feeding: Photosynthetic, but will readily accept “meaty” bits like mysis or brine shrimp; feeding once a week can significantly increase the rate at which the heads split
Aggressiveness: Peaceful but needs ample space
Care Level: Easy to Moderate (very hardy once the tank is stable; requires consistent Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium for skeletal growth)
