Overview
The Yaeyamaensis Octospawn (Euphyllia yaeyamaensis) is a captivating LPS coral prized for its intricately branched polyps resembling clusters of tiny grapes or octopus suckers. Known as the “sophisticated cousin” of the common Frogspawn, this coral offers a unique, bubbly texture and a dense, compact growth that creates a lush appearance even in small colonies.
Colorization
- Colors typically feature mint green or teal polyps atop purple or brownish stalks.
- Rare “Master” or “Rainbow” morphs showcase pink or gold highlights for a striking display.
Size
- Usually available as a single polyp head, ideal for budding reef enthusiasts or collectors expanding their LPS collection.
Lighting
- Prefers moderate lighting between 125–175 PAR.
- Slightly lower light intensity than Torch corals helps maintain its deep pigment and vibrant coloration.
Water Flow
- Thrives under low to medium water flow.
- Turbulent or random water movement is ideal to prevent tissue damage; avoid direct strong currents that cause polyp retraction.
Feeding
- Responds positively to weekly target feeding with mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets.
- Feeding is beneficial but not strictly required for survival, supporting healthy growth and coloration.
Aggressiveness
- Peaceful nature but requires ample space to avoid conflicts with neighboring corals.
Care Level
- Easy to moderate care once acclimated.
- Needs stable water parameters, especially alkalinity and calcium, to sustain skeleton development.
- Hardy and suitable for hobbyists with some reef-keeping experience aiming to add sophistication to their aquascape.
