Overview
The Grandis Palythoa (Palythoa grandis), also known as the “Cinnamon Grandis” or “Giant Paly,” is a standout among zoanthids due to its impressive polyp size and unique appearance. As one of the largest polyps in the zoanthid family, the Grandis captivates reef enthusiasts with its fan-like “eyelash” tentacles and richly textured discs, adding a prehistoric and dramatic flair to any reef aquarium.
Colorization
This coral exhibits a vivid color palette with purple and green tentacles that encircle a neon green base, culminating in a striking purple center. This brilliant coloration enhances the visual diversity of your reef setup.
Size
The Grandis Palythoa is known for its exceptionally large polyps, typically consisting of 1-2 massive polyps that dwarf standard zoanthids, often reaching the size of a half-dollar coin.
Lighting
Prefers low to moderate lighting, thriving best when placed lower in the aquarium. Sudden exposure to high PAR zones may cause bleaching, so a gradual acclimation is recommended.
Water Flow
Requires a medium water flow to ensure detritus does not accumulate within its deep cups, promoting healthy coral respiration and cleanliness.
Feeding
This coral is highly predatory with a robust feeding reaction. It benefits from regular target feeding using mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, or large LPS pellets, enhancing its growth and vibrancy.
Aggressiveness
Semi-aggressive by nature, the Grandis Palythoa grows quickly and can overshadow smaller corals. It contains potent palytoxin, so careful handling is advised.
Care Level
This species is easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice and experienced reef keepers seeking a visually impactful and hardy coral.
