Overview
The Red Cynarina (often called the Meat Coral or Button Coral) is one of the most iconic “luxury” corals in the hobby. It consists of a single, massive, translucent polyp that expands into a giant, glistening orb of deep crimson. It is highly sought after for its “cathedral” look—under the right light, you can see the intricate skeletal structure (septa) radiating beneath the thick, jelly-like flesh. While it looks delicate, the Cynarina is actually quite sturdy and can live for decades if its basic needs are met.
Coloration: Deep ruby red or “cherry” red; often features a contrasting neon green or white “eye” (mouth) and translucent, window-like patches in the flesh.
Size: Usually 2–4 inches when closed, but a healthy specimen can expand to over 6 inches in diameter during the day.
Lighting: Low to Moderate (50–100 PAR). These are deep-water corals. Too much light will cause the red pigment to “bleach” or turn orange, and the tissue may stay retracted to protect itself.
Water flow: Low (Gentle, indirect flow is non-negotiable. Because the tissue is so heavy and thin, high flow can cause the flesh to “billow” like a parachute, eventually tearing it against its own sharp skeleton).
Feeding: Essential; they are active hunters with a massive appetite. They have a very large mouth and will easily swallow whole mysis shrimp or small pieces of silversides. Feeding them weekly is the secret to getting that “puffy” look.
Aggressiveness: Peaceful (They have no sweeper tentacles, but because they expand so much, they shouldn’t be placed too close to neighbors that might sting them).
Care Level: Easy to Moderate (Their slow metabolism makes them very stable, but they cannot tolerate “dirty” water or high nitrates).
