The Purple People Eater (PPE) Zoa (Zoanthus/Palythoa sp.) is an absolute icon in the reef-keeping world. As one of the original “named” designer zoas, it set the standard for high-end soft corals. Recognized by its massive polyps and striking color contrast, the PPE features a deep purple face surrounded by a bright, neon-green skirt, with a distinctive lime-green “slit” mouth right in the center.
Coloration: Deep royal purple disc, orange skirts, and a bright green slit-like mouth.
Growth Pattern: Mat-forming/Colonial (grows large individual polyps that form dense mats over rockwork). Sold as 2-3 heads on a 0.5 – 1 inch frag plug.
Lighting: Low to Moderate (PAR 75–150).
Water Flow: Low to Medium.
Feeding: Optional; polyps are large enough to consume fine particulate foods and micro-pellets.
Aggressiveness: Peaceful (can crowd neighbors, but lacks stinging sweepers).
