Overview
The Bonsai Acropora, specifically the Acropora valida, is a highly prized SPS coral known for its thick, branching formations that resemble a miniature gnarled tree. It is renowned within the reef hobby for its striking tri-color palette and is often chosen by hobbyists progressing from LPS to more challenging SPS corals due to its somewhat forgiving nature.
Colorization
- Deep purple to indigo skeletal branches
- Neon green polyps creating a fuzzy texture
- Bright blue or violet glowing growth tips
Size
The coral is typically supplied as a frag plug measuring between 0.5 to 1 inch, making it an excellent size for placement and growth in reef tanks.
Lighting
Requires high lighting conditions, specifically between 250-400 PAR, to sustain its vibrant purple hues. Insufficient lighting can lead to color fading and a shift towards brown.
Water Flow
Thrives under high, turbulent, and indirect water flow. This flow pattern ensures proper oxygenation, nutrient delivery, and prevents detritus accumulation within its dense branches.
Feeding
Primarily photosynthetic, the Bonsai Acropora benefits from clean, stable water supplemented with amino acids or very fine SPS-specific particulate foods to promote healthy growth.
Aggressiveness
This coral is peaceful, lacking stinging tentacles, but may shade corals below as it develops horizontal “tables” over time.
Care Level
Advanced care is required, with careful monitoring and maintenance of alkaline and calcium levels, alongside low but nonzero nitrates and phosphates to maintain optimal health.
