The Green and Blue Acan (now scientifically classified as Micromussa lordhowensis) is often called the “marshmallow” of the reef tank. Acans are famous for their incredibly puffy, fleshy polyps that completely hide their underlying stony skeleton. The Green and Blue morph is a cooling, aquatic masterpiece—usually featuring “minty” or “neon” green centers surrounded by rings of royal blue, teal, or slate gray. Because they are peaceful and stay low to the ground, they are the primary choice for creating a “Zoa-style” garden made of fleshy LPS corals.
Coloration: Neon or lime green centers (mouths) with concentric rings of cobalt blue, turquoise, or icy gray.
Size: 0.5-1 inch frag
Lighting: Low to Moderate (50–125 PAR; too much light will cause them to “shrink” and lose their puffy appearance).
Water flow: Low (they prefer a gentle “sway”; high flow will prevent the polyps from inflating and can cause the skeleton to tear through the flesh).
Feeding: Essential; while photosynthetic, Acans are “pigs” of the reef. They grow significantly faster and stay puffier if fed mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets 2–3 times a week.
Aggressiveness: Peaceful (unlike Favias, Acans have very short stings and can generally touch other Micromussa lordhowensis without issue).
Care Level: Easy (as long as you keep your Alkalinity stable and your fish aren’t nippers).
