Blastomussa corals (often called “Blastos”) are iconic Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals beloved for their fleshy, donut-shaped corallites and intense, contrasting colors. There are two primary species: B. wellsi, which features large, clustered polyps, and B. merleti, which has smaller, branching polyps. Known for their slow growth and peaceful temperament, Blastos are perfect for adding a sophisticated “floral” look to the lower sections of a reef tank. They are relatively hardy, though they appreciate stable water chemistry and a gentle touch when it comes to lighting and flow.
Coloration: Vivid reds, with vibrant green “eye” or center
Size: 1–2 inch frag (usually 1-2 polyps)
Lighting: Low to moderate (prefers lower placement; high light can cause tissue recession)
Water flow: Low to medium (enough to keep them clean, but not enough to fold the fleshy tissue over the skeleton)
Feeding: Benefits greatly from weekly spot-feeding of mysis shrimp or specialized LPS pellets
Aggressiveness: Peaceful (lacks long sweeper tentacles)
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
