The Red and Blue Favia (often referred to as a “War Coral” or “Brain Coral”) is a classic centerpiece of the LPS reef world. Known for its intense, contrasting colors, it typically features deep crimson or “cherry” red ridges with electric blue or teal centers (the “eyes”). It is an encrusting coral, meaning it will slowly creep over your rockwork, creating a vibrant, textured carpet of color. Because of its hardiness and striking appearance, itβs a favorite for both beginners and seasoned collectors looking to add high-contrast “pop” to the lower levels of their tank.
Coloration: Deep scarlet or crimson red ridges with contrasting neon blue, teal, or cyan centers.
Size: 0.5 to 1 inch frag
Lighting: Low to Moderate (75β150 PAR; if the red turns “dusty” or brown, it may need slightly more light; if the blue washes out, it’s likely getting too much).
Water flow: Low to Medium (enough to keep detritus from settling in the “eyes,” but not so much that the flesh is blown against the skeleton).
eeding: Highly Recommended; Favia are voracious eaters. At night, they extend long feeding tentacles. Offering mysis shrimp or LPS pellets 1β2 times a week will dramatically increase growth and color.
Aggressiveness: Very Aggressive (they possess long “sweeper” tentacles that emerge at night and can sting anything within a 2β3 inch radius).
Care Level: Easy (very resilient to varying water conditions once established).
