Overview:
The Welsophyllia (often referred to as the Folded Brain Coral or Trachyphyllia) is the ultimate “showpiece” of the sand bed. While taxonomically merged with Trachyphyllia geoffroyi, the name “Welsophyllia” is still used in the hobby to describe specimens with a more symmetrical, circular, and deeply folded “brain” shape. They are famous for their neon-metallic colors and their incredible ability to “puff up” to nearly triple their skeletal size.
Coloration: Often a tri-color mix of neon green, deep red, and metallic blue, with shimmering “marbling” or stripes.
Growth Pattern: Solitary/Mounding (a single, large, fleshy polyp over a heavy, bone-like base). 3-5 inches in size.
Lighting: Low to Moderate (PAR 80–120).
Water Flow: Low (Gentle, laminar flow is essential).
Feeding: Very High (needs direct meaty feedings to maintain its massive tissue).
Aggressiveness: Peaceful (lacks long sweepers, but will sting what it touches).
Care Level: Easy to Moderate.
