The ASD (Aqua SD) Rainbow Millepora is a legendary “Holy Grail” coral within the Acropora family. While it is technically an Acropora millepora, it is distinguished by its incredibly long, shaggy polyps that give it a “furry” appearance, and a color palette that seems to defy physics. A healthy specimen features a mesmerizing transition of colors: deep red or pink branches, neon green or yellow growth tips, and polyps that can range from orange to electric blue.
Coloration: A “Skittles” pack of colors; typically a reddish-pink base, transitioning to yellow/green tips, with multi-colored polyps that create a shifting rainbow effect.
Size: Sold as 1–1.5 inch frags. It is a classic “branching” coral that eventually forms a thick, bushy colony.
Lighting: High to Very High (350–500 PAR). To get the “Rainbow” to actually show up, you need intense light. Under lower light, it will often “brown out” or turn a simple solid green.
Water flow: Very High. Milleporas have some of the longest polyps of any SPS coral; they need strong, turbulent flow to keep those polyps dancing, which helps the coral catch food and shed mucus.
Feeding: Highly Recommended. Because of its massive polyp extension, the Rainbow Mille is an excellent hunter. It thrives on daily doses of amino acids and fine coral “dust” foods like golden pearls or reef roids.
Aggressiveness: Semi-aggressive. It has a potent sting for an SPS coral and will quickly encrust over and kill any neighboring corals that get in its way.
Care Level: Advanced. It is a “canary in the coal mine”—if your water quality or stability dips, the Rainbow Mille is often the first coral to show stress by retracting its polyps.
