Red and Gold Favia

The Red and Gold Favia (Dipsastraea sp., formerly classified under Favia) is a high-contrast Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral known for its fiery warmth and regal color scheme. Famed for its honeycomb-like skeletal structure, this morph features deep crimson-red or cherry-colored corallite walls that encircle glowing, metallic gold-to-yellow oral discs and mouths, creating an intense “lava-like” pop under heavy blue actinic lighting.

Coloration: Deep crimson-red, ruby, or cherry coenosteum (skeletal walls), surrounding brilliant metallic gold, amber, or chartreuse-yellow oral discs and mouths.

Growth Pattern: Encrusting and Dome-forming (forms massive, dome-shaped colonies with closely packed corallites sharing distinct, ridged skeletal walls). Sold as a frag on a 0.5 – 1 inch frag plug.

Lighting: Low to Moderate (PAR 75–150).

Water Flow: Low to Moderate (Gentle, indirect sweeping current).

Feeding: Active nocturnal LPS carnivore; extends translucent feeder tentacles after dark to capture mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and LPS particulate pellets.

Aggressiveness: Aggressive (produces long, thin nocturnal sweeper tentacles that will sting nearby corals).

Care Level: Easy to Moderate (Hardy, highly responsive to feeding, and well-suited for established LPS-dominated displays).
