Overview:
The Toadstool Leather Coral (Sarcophyton sp.) is the quintessential “centerpiece” of the soft coral world. Known for its iconic mushroom-like shape, it features a thick, sturdy stalk topped with a broad, fleshy “cap” (capitulum) covered in long, flowing tentacles. It is one of the hardiest corals in the hobby, making it the perfect choice for beginners, though high-end “Long Polyp” or “Neon Green” varieties remain highly coveted by advanced reefers.
Coloration: Ranges from classic tan, cream, or brown to vibrant neon “electric” green. Polyps can be white, gold, or green.
Growth Pattern: Arborescent/Mushroom-shaped (grows upward and outward, eventually forming a massive canopy).
Lighting: Low to Moderate (PAR 100–250). They are highly adaptable.
Water Flow: Medium to High (Stronger flow helps them shed their waxy film).
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic (absorbs nutrients from the water).
Aggressiveness: Peaceful (but can grow large enough to shade out neighbors).
Care Level: Beginner (very easy).
